CHARLOTTE – Week nine of the 2021 season is in books and with one week still remaining in the league’s regular season the matchup for the conference title is set. #13 Bowie State and Fayetteville State will meet in the CIAA Football Championship in Salem, VA on November 13 for the third straight season. Should both teams finish the regular season with victories, the championship matchup could have some important playoff implications as both teams are currently ranked in NCAA Super Region Two. The Bulldogs are currently no. 2 in those rankings with a chance to host the first round of the playoffs while the Broncos are currently sitting at no. 10 in the same poll, looking to play their way into the national postseason.
That said, let’s take a look at how teams finished this week throughout the conference:
Shaw 38, Winston-Salem State 14
Shaw won their third straight game with a 38-14 win over Winston-Salem State on Senior Day in Raleigh. Down 14-10 at the break thanks to a pair of touchdown runs by WSSU quarterback Cameron Lewis, Shaw ran off 28 unanswered points and held the Rams scoreless in the second half. Shaw quarterback Torrin Campbell threw for 130 yards and three touchdowns on the game, including two in the second half, while running back Sidney Gibbs ran for a game-high 152 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown, helping the team rush for 261 yards on the day. In addition to his two scores, Lewis threw for a game-high 162 yards and led the Rams with 70 yards rushing. WSSU’s Tayshaun Taylor led all tacklers with nine stops, all solo, that included a tackle for loss. A trio of Shaw defenders tied for the team lead with six tackles each led by Devon Hunt with six solo stops, helping the Bears hold WSSU to just 215 yards of total offense.

Johnson C. Smith 34, Saint Augustine’s 13
Johnson C. Smith registered their first win of the season on homecoming with a 34-13 victory over Saint Augustine’s. In a game that was televised nationally on AspireTV, JCSU jumped out to an early 14-0 lead thanks to a pair of Antonio Wallace to Reggie Bryant touchdown passes that included a 50-yarder on the opening drive of the game. Saint Aug would respond late in the second quarter with a 10-yard scoring run by Christopher Perkins to cap a seven-play, 65-yard drive and make the score 14-7 at the half. In the second half the Golden Bulls would run off 21 unanswered points, including another Wallace to Bryant scoring pass from 23 yards out, to pull away. Wallace completed 12 of 19 passes for 198 yards with four touchdowns on the day while Bryant caught eight passes for 135 yards and three scores. JCSU also rushed for 292 yards as a team, including two 100-yard rushers with Davion Nelson totaling a game-high 119 yards and a score while Tyreik Leach finished 114 yards on 18 carries. Perkins led SAU on offense with 74 yards passing while also rushing for 21 yards and two scores. Falcons defender Joseph Harris finished with a game-high 13 tackles that included one and a half tackles for loss. The JCSU defense registered five sacks while Reggie Louis and Demarcus Jordan led the way with five tackles each.

#13 Bowie State 31, Lincoln (PA) 7
Nationally-ranked Bowie State won their 19 straight conference game with a 31-7 win over Lincoln to secure the CIAA Northern Division and a spot in the conference title game. BSU dominated in the run game with 378 yards and four touchdown on the ground led by Calil Wilkins, who rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown, and Corey Johnson, who produced 83 yards on eight carries that included a 43-yard touchdown. Bulldog quarterback Ja’rome Johnson had an efficient day with 10 completions on 14 attempts for 146 yards. Isaiah Wilson led Lincoln offensively with 169 yards passing and 30 yards rushing that included a one-yard touchdown run while teammate Michael Credle led all pass catchers with 134 yards on five catches. Jordan Carted led the Bowie State defense, which held LU to just 62 yards rushing, with six tackles. Lincoln’s Devon Cathcart had a game-high 15 tackles, including 12 solos, while teammate Makhai Beasley had two sacks on the day.

Chowan 38, Virginia State 30
Chowan ended their three-game skid with a 38-30 road win over Virginia State. VSU jumped out to an early 14-0 lead thanks to a one-yard scoring run by Darius Hagans on the opening drive followed by a 28-yard touchdown pass from Chauncey Caldwell to Marquez Phillips on their next possession. Chowan respond by running off 24 straight points that included three total touchdowns courtesy of Bryce Witt (two passing, one rushing). Both teams would add touchdowns late in the second quarter to make it a 31-20 halftime score. VSU’s Nicholas Woolfolk made it 31-23 with a 21-yard field goal midway through the third, but Chowan would respond late in the quarter with a four-yard scoring pass from Witt to Tyrek McNeil after a turnover gave the Hawks a short field. Early in the fourth quarter, VSU would answer with a 35-yard scoring pass from Tylin Oden to Darius Hagans, second touchdown catch of the game, to make it 38-30. However, two punts and an interception on their final three offensive possessions would end up any hopes of the Trojans making a comeback. Witt scored for five total touchdowns and threw for 197 yards while backfield mate McNeil finished with 152 all purpose yards (75 rushing, 77 receiving) and caught two touchdowns. Hagans scored three total touchdowns for VSU and finished with 157 all purpose yards, including 86 yards on the ground, while Caldwell threw for 213 yards and two scores. CU’s Gilberto Ortiz led all defenders with 11 tackles, including three and a half for loss, along with a sack. Kolby Hunter led VSU with eight total tackles and also registered one and a half sacks.

Virginia Union 44, Elizabeth City State 14
Virginia Union secured a 44-14 win over Elizabeth City State on the road. In first half, the Panthers got three rushing touchdowns from Jada Byers, who finished with a game-high 99 yards rushing, and another two passing from Khalid Morris, who threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns for the game. The VUU offense put up 532 total yards, including 234 yards rushing. ECSU’s Kevin Caldwell had 26 completions for 309 yards and a rushing touchdown, but the VUU held the Vikings to just 10 yards on the ground for the game. VUU receiver Charles Hall produced a game-high 131 receiving yards on four catches and a touchdown while Josiah Hayes had a game-high eight catches and led ECSU with 85 yards receiving. Jarrett Sumiel led the VUU defense with eight total stops and ECSU’s Juanya’ Majette led all tacklers with 11 tackles for the game.

Fayetteville State 34, Livingstone 0
Fayetteville State defeated Livingstone, 34-0, to win the CIAA Southern Division title and earn their fourth straight trip to the conference title game. FSU quarterback K’hari Lane had a game-high 242 yards passing and threw three touchdowns to three different receivers, including a 63-yarder to Ke’Monta Stockdale, while running back Donshel Jetton led all rushers with 107 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Keyshawn James led the FSU defense with eight tackles, including three tackles for loss, and had a game-high two sacks while teammate Jerome Bentley intercepted a pass and returned it 11 yards for a score. Livingstone’s Andre Harris rushed for 57 yards on nine carries while Raymond McGuire had a game-high 10 tackles for the Blue Bears.
